ABSTRACT
Dentophobia is a significant clinical problem that affects both the course and effectiveness of dental treatment. Dental anxiety has a biopsychosocial nature and may be associated not only with previous experiences and psychological factors but also with functional disturbances within the oral cavity. The aim of this article is to present the importance of functional assessment of the oral cavity in the process of patient adaptation to dental treatment. Based on a literature review, the role of factors such as an exaggerated gag reflex, oral sensory hypersensitivity, bruxism, increased masticatory muscle tension, and disorders of swallowing and breathing are discussed. These symptoms are often interpreted solely as anxiety-related reactions, which may lead to misdiagnosis and difficulties in dental management. The article highlights that incorporating elements of myofunctional assessment before initiating dental treatment allows for better adaptation of clinical procedures, increases treatment tolerance, and improves patient comfort and safety. A holistic approach that considers both psychological and functional aspects of the oral cavity may significantly support patient adaptation to dental care.
